Was Jesus poor?

God doesn’t want us to be poor, sick, or homeless. Many Christians are deceived about Jesus’ life on this earth. They believe that Jesus was poor and homeless and that affects how they believe they are supposed to live as well. They do not know the whole truth about the life of Jesus.

John 8:32
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

If you know the full truth of God, you can be free from sickness, poverty, and disease.

Your life is based on how much freedom you have – how much truth you know.

The more deeply we understand the truth of the Word of God, the freer we can become. God wants us to be totally set free. If you are free, you can enjoy the life that God has given you.
We know that Jesus was born in a manger. So because of that, many people believe that He was poor. But that is not the case. Jesus was born in a manger because there was no room left in the city, in any location.

Luke 2:7
7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Jesus was not born into a poor family. Joseph was a carpenter. If you study history, you will find that carpentry was a good, respectable profession. He made good money. Jesus grew up in a good home. They had plenty of food and nice things.

Luke 9:51-58
51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”
55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. 56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.
57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

Many people believe that Jesus was homeless based on this scripture (Luke 9:58) because he says that He had nowhere to lay His head. That’s not what this is about. In Luke 9:51, we see that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. They were traveling and needed to find a place to sleep. The people in the town rejected Him. They locked the gate and didn’t let Him in. In verse 58, Jesus was talking about that night, that they didn’t have anywhere to stay.

Jesus had a place to live. When the disciples came to seek Him, He showed them His home.

John 1:37-39
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).

The Bible doesn’t describe His home or tell us how big it was, but it does tell us He had a place to stay. They stayed there with Jesus all day. This scripture confirms that Jesus was not homeless.

Jesus’ ministry had money. How do we know? He had an accountant, Judas. Judas took care of the money. If you don’t have a lot of money, you don’t need anyone to keep track of it.

John 12:6
6 This he [Judas] said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.

When Jesus was ministering to the crowds, the disciples asked Him if He wanted them to use their money to pay for their food. They asked, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread?” They weren’t concerned about the money but the availability of food.

Mark 6:34-37
34 And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things. 35 When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.”
37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

We should not think that Jesus was poor or homeless. Jesus also wore nice clothing.

John 19:23-24
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Therefore the soldiers did these things.

They didn’t want to tear or cut up the tunic because it was a nice garment, quality material.

King Herod’s servants took care of Jesus and His disciples.

Luke 8:3
and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance.

Satan’s plan is for the church to be poor. He wants people to believe that Jesus was poor and that they should be poor. He wants to deceive people. He wants the church to give itself permission to be poor so that they can look holy. But poverty isn’t holy. Poverty is fruit of sin and judgment.

We can learn from these scriptures that God wants us to live a good life, to have nice things, to walk in prosperity.

In order to receive good things from God, our mind has to be sound and in a good place with God. God wants to give us good things. When you receive good things with a good mind, God will be very happy. God wants to provide our needs, just like we want to provide for our children’s needs. For this to happen, our soul must prosper. Our mind needs to be mature. We must know how to handle the blessing that He gives us.

God bless you,
