What causes spiritual weakness?

Passage: Joshua 1

Satan’s goal is to make Christian people weak and powerless.

What causes weakness in your spirit?
#1 Overvaluing and overestimating your own spiritual condition

When you believe that you are in a good place spiritually, you stop pushing yourself to go further with God.

We always need to seek to become more like God and to become more spiritual. We should never become complacent in our spiritual condition.

#2 Feeling like you have everything you need in your life

When you feel like you have everything you want, you become complacent and stop praying and studying the Word.

When King David was weak, he sought God. When he felt like he had “made it” he became complacent and fell into sin with Bathsheba. He felt like his military was strong and that he didn’t need to fight the battle anymore. He sent his military to fight and stayed at home enjoying his palace and his position.

2 Samuel 11:1-5
1 It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
2 Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”

David felt like he had everything under control. This wrong decision led to a series of other problems in his kingdom and in his family.

#3 Losing sight of the purpose of your life

You need to know why you are living this life, why you are serving God, why you are praying, why you are studying, why you serve God. You have to have clear direction and understanding about why you are doing what you do every day to serve God.

If you just serve God without purpose, you will become weaker and weaker in your spirit and will eventually die.

Joshua didn’t have clear direction in his life, even though God gave him an assignment. He thought that assignment was for Moses, but not for him. He had to embrace that calling as his own.

#4 Sexual sin

Sexual sin will destroy a spiritual mind and heart. You must guard against sexual sin. You must protect your mind and your heart from sexual sin.

#5 Pride

You must guard against pride. You must guard against the thoughts that say you can do something better than someone else. God will use those who are humble. God used Joshua because he served Moses all the way to the end of his life. He was humble and obedient to his leader, Moses.

God bless you,
