Temples and Tents

Paul called our body a temple, but he also called our body a tent.

2 Corinthians 5:1-5
1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

What is a tent:
#1 A temporary shelter

The people of Israel lived in tents as they traveled through the wilderness. Tents our temporary shelters. Our bodies are not permanent; they are temporary shelters. Our bodies, our lives, are like morning fog, very temporary.

James 4:14
14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

Why would worship something that is so temporary. Beauty come and goes. Your body is not forever. Do not put too much stock or heart into this body, this flesh. Put your heart on Jesus.

#2 Tents are very fragile and easily shaken

When the wind blows, the tent is shaken. It doesn’t stand well against weather. Our bodies are like that – not very strong. Even if we take very good care of our bodies, we are not that strong. Our bodies are very fragile.

You can get injured very easily. We get sick easily. Our skin gets old and wrinkly.

#3 Sooner or later the tent will be taken down

Tents have a purpose. When you are done with the purpose, you take it down and put it away.

An earthly tent will get old and disappear, but we have an earthly home that is waiting for us. Until we receive that glorified body, we must take care of this tent and temple. But don’t worship the tent.

The best way to take care of your tent is to pray and study the Word of God.

Do you treat your body like it’s a tent? Your body is not your own. It’s not your forever home. When you go home to heaven, you will have an everlasting body, a glorified body.

God bless you,
